Did you know?

It is said that the eagle sheds its feathers in the beginning of spring, and with fresh plumage assumes the appearance of youth, a symbol of resurrection.  However, the eagle while typically associated as a noble bird or as a bird of prey, is also a carrion bird.  In this fashion an eagle is used as a symbol that is sent to work to eliminate that which is dead, devouring and cleaning away decaying and putrescent flesh.  There’s a story that Benjamin Franklin didn’t want to use the eagle as the symbol of America for that very reason. Franklin preferred the turkey because he believed it symbolized peace and prosperity. As it turns out the turkey God deemed a “clean bird”, while the eagles are not (they are scavengers).

“The fourth angel sounded, and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a third of it, and the night in the same way. Then I looked, and I heard an eagle flying in midheaven, saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!” Revelation 8:13 (NASB)
